Classroom Library Chaos

Last year I stumbled upon these fabulous classroom library genre labels on Beth Newingham's website. I was getting so frustrated when I knew the exact book to recommend to a student but I had to take 10 minutes hunting for it in the clutter of my book shelves. Not only was it a struggle to try to find a specific book; but the students were unintentionally ruining my beloved books by trying to shove them onto the shelves.

Solution! Book baskets. I used these adorable labels to separate my classroom library into genre baskets. After laminating the labels, I punched a hole in the corner and used binder rings to hand them on the front of the baskets.

For those of you who are worried about breaking the bank on this classroom update... don't you worry. The baskets were from the dollar store so very easy on the wallet.

My OCD is kicking in because first thing tomorrow I'm rearranging this color order!
I need help...
How do you have your classroom library organized?

  2. I printed these same labels and one of the many things on my to-do list is to laminate them and put them on my dollar tree baskets. :) I used to have a crazy library and this is the first year that I have all of my books organized by genre and some by topic. We'll see how it goes!

ps. I just found your blog randomly through Pinterest and could not be more excited that you are a fifth grade teacher. I also teach fifth and seem to find way more primary-level bloggers than intermediate. I just started my teaching blog last week and I am on a mission to find more upper elementary bloggers and couldn't believe I just randomly came upon one! Looking forward to reading more from you!

  3. I have a similar system in my classroom. This year I'm planning to also colour or number code the books to help my students put the books back in the right place. I teach French and my students aren't always very adept at knowing what basket to put books back in. So I'll put a dot on each book to correspond with the basket it came from. Hopefully this will save us some organizing and cleaning time.
